Background of the Study
Globalization has dramatically reshaped communication practices, particularly through digital media. Nigerian Pidgin, historically an informal lingua franca, has experienced significant evolution as it adapts to global communication norms. In digital platforms such as social media, messaging apps, and online forums, efforts to standardize Nigerian Pidgin have intensified, driven by the need for clarity, efficiency, and broader acceptance in both casual and professional contexts (Adejumo, 2023). Globalization introduces external linguistic influences and new communication technologies that simultaneously challenge and enhance the standardization process. Advocates argue that a standardized form of Nigerian Pidgin can serve as a bridge between diverse linguistic communities in Nigeria, promoting unity and effective communication in an increasingly digital world. However, tensions exist between preserving the fluid, adaptive nature of Pidgin and imposing rigid norms that may stifle its natural evolution. This study investigates how globalization affects the standardization of Nigerian Pidgin in digital communication, examining language usage patterns, user attitudes, and the role of digital media in facilitating or hindering standardization (Olufemi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the rapid growth of digital communication, Nigerian Pidgin remains in a state of flux with respect to standardization. The forces of globalization have introduced new vocabulary and communication styles, creating inconsistencies in usage that complicate efforts to establish a uniform standard. This variability poses challenges for content creators, educators, and policymakers who seek to harness Pidgin’s potential as a national lingua franca in digital contexts. The study aims to address these issues by assessing the impact of globalization on the standardization process and exploring strategies to achieve a balance between linguistic flexibility and consistency (Adejumo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the influence of globalization on Nigerian Pidgin usage in digital media.

  2. To evaluate current standardization efforts and identify inconsistencies.

  3. To recommend strategies for achieving effective standardization.

Research Questions

  1. How has globalization affected the linguistic features of Nigerian Pidgin in digital communication?

  2. What challenges do standardization efforts face in the digital realm?

  3. How can policymakers balance flexibility and consistency in Nigerian Pidgin standardization?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of globalization and digital communication in shaping Nigerian Pidgin. The findings will assist linguists, digital media experts, and policymakers in formulating strategies that promote a standardized yet dynamic form of Nigerian Pidgin, enhancing effective communication across diverse platforms (Adejumo, 2023; Olufemi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Nigerian Pidgin in digital communication and does not cover traditional media or offline language practices.

Definitions of Terms
